Halfway Point!

Yippee!!!! Reached the halfway point with my final final finality version. I had to redo Cela’s dialogue because too many folks got confused/thought it was misspellings. I also kept in mind this time about making sure the final product was exactly what you wanted to put out there. So I went through and took out a shit ton of extraneous words. The novel is now 1000 words lighter. Revisions can take forever. You can ALWAYS make your work better. It’s knowing when to let go that’s the trick. To that end, today comes news that Annie Proulx wishes she never…

First 6 Chapters in Final State

Okay. Last night I went over the first six chapters AGAIN! Got them into their final, final finality. This means NO MORE CHANGES at all! I have to be okay with this. I read out Chapter 22 to W, and did some changes there. Also finalized the decision to revise Cela’s dialogue. I was right. It reads MUCH better. Hoping now to be done by Thanksgiving. Mike also let me know sketches were coming soon for the cover art.

Accents

Some readers love them, some hate them. Cela talks with an accent but I’m wondering how much of her dialogue should reflect the accent. Right now, I’m dropping the “g” off “ing”, the “t” and “d” off the last sound like “night” is “nigh’” but I think that might be too much for a reader to plow through. I’m thinking of switching back to just dropping the “g” and changing “to” to “ta” Here’s an example of Cela’s dialogue the way it was originally written: “Is th’ stew ready yet?” The rumble from Cela’s stomach could be heard at the…

The Writing is Done

As of last night, there will be no new ideas, no new plot lines in Woven Myths Book 1: A Slice of Quietude. The only thing that’ll be done are revisions to awkward sentences. Hopefully, we’ll be done with this part within 1/2 a week. And then, Val gets the book to prep for publication. Mike will work on the cover over the next two weeks. I’ll need to find out from Dawn if she’ll be putting the cover together or Val. Mike’s already told me he doesn’t do fonts. Then it’s marketing. I’ve already got a small list of…

Sometimes, the Best Move is to Remove it

Westina and I have been reading out chapters to each other. Most awkward sentences need a quick fix. But sometimes, the sentences only make sense to me because I’m the one who wrote them. You know it’s an awful sentence when even I have no idea what’s the meaning behind the words. We highlighted two such sentences. The first one, after 10 minutes of trying to figure out exactly what I was trying to convey and how to convey it, I finally realized I could take the entire sentence out and it didn’t subtract from the story. So, I removed…

So close!

Last night, I pushed hard. Fixed Chapters 21-27 using Val’s edits and also tried to make sure Cela’s accent followed the new Aussie rules. So part of what’s left now is the rewrite of the last battle. That’s the main focus tonight and since it’s raining and I live in the back of a cul-de-sac’s cul-de-sac, I seriously doubt we’ll see any trick or treaters. Maybe Carlos’ kids across the street will come by (they didn’t last year). Then over the weekend, Westina and I will read out loud the entire book. I’ve a feeling a table read will be…

The End is Near!

It’s so close now. Yesterday I took the day off work because the fluids in my lungs made the sloshing sound like a tanker during an earthquake. Between nap times, I worked on the edits. Managed to get from Chapters 11-21 done. That means, less than 10 chapters remain for Val’s edits. It also leaves the revision of the last battle, which I’ve been futzing with in the back of my head. After that, W and I will read each chapter out loud, to highlight any awkward sentences that need fixing. Fix those and I’m done! So, I’m going to…

More Kinjara Edits

I’ve now gotten to the point in my chapters where I found Kinjara’s voice. But in the chapter before, #15 I was still groping for it. Here’s an original paragraph from Chapter 15: Laughing despite herself, Kinjara lost her rhythm for a second. She recovered nicely, “Their constant companionship equated in their other siblings’ eyes two possibilities. That either Arm’wal celebrated mutual celibacy tendencies OR the two Goddhai were celebrating blatant disregard of Om’em’s rules. Neither assumption had fact as foundation, but only “truth” as a coat of paint and therefore received as fact. Of the two possibilities, the more…

15 Days ‘Til November?!?!

Well, it wasn’t supposed to happen so quickly. Nanowrimo starts in 15 days. Usually I’m starting about now because usually I have to go away for Thanksgiving (not this year), but I’m not even sure I can do this, this year. I’ve still got about 14 chapters of Kinjara’s rewrites, then I have to go over Val Jones‘ edits and revise the whole draft, especially Cela’s dialect to make it consistent. Where the heck did time go? I know, into my harvest. Oh well. Tonight, it’s pick up the pace time.
