Needing Set Up Time to Get Into My World

For the past few years, I’ve used the time alone in the car on my return commute to leave reality and inhabit the world I’ve created. I think about plot, character development, civilizations, culture, dialogue and whatever else might snag my thoughts. By the time I reach my home, reality has receded into the background, for me to go through motions until I’m at my computer, ready to type whatever thoughts had been swirling down. This year, however, my thoughts have been disjointed and when I sit down to type, I’m desperately aware of the fact that I am on…

Mental & Physical Breaks

I took a break. Did you notice? It’s been a long time since I wrote anything, for here or on my novel. Even my facebook posts have been in drips and drabs. I wish there was some epiphany behind the breaks, or some desire to “get away from it all.” Maybe there were reasons of sorts, but they never formed into a spoken desire. It was more of a “not today” type of rejection. Am I rested? Probably. Are my creative juices rejuvenated? More than likely. I guess there’s been a part of me wanting to wait until the writing…

Cracks in the Block

Around November 15th, a block of dense material dropped on top of my imagination’s path, obscuring any sight. As time went on, the holidays, birthdays and video games happened. As did the discovery of the Amazing Race on Amazon Prime. As a result, the block stayed and its weight settled it onto my imagination’s ground. Every time I looked over, the block looked more massive, more settled, more… permanent. Which led to me feeling a little despondent at the thought. First it was, okay, after Thanksgiving, I’ll sit and write. Then it was, okay, after W’s birthday I’ll write. Then it…

Breathing Space!

Whelp, so much for doing Nanowrimo this year. I started okay for the first week in November, but then life happened. More specifically, work happened. You see, my day job is in health insurance, specializing in small group health insurance. December is the worst month in our business… worst in terms of time and focus, best in terms of income. December is when most groups renew. Why? Because rates change on Jan. 1 and if you renew in December, you’re getting 2015 rates for 11 out of 12 months in 2016. Hence the workload. What’s made this year worse is…

Numbers to Remember During NaNoWriMo

Countdown to Nanowrimo: 3 days. Days in Nov. taken up by events, birthdays, holidays, visits: 8-10 days # of words to hit on remainder of the days: 2500 words/day # of days in Nov. I’ll be grumpy, proud and ornery: all of them # of minutes spent replotting whilst I’m writing: hopefully ZERO # of Raiders games to fit in during this time? 5

Yay! Revised Prologue is done and it’s so much better!

Finished the revised prologue last night and boy, did I up the stakes. I finally realized keeping the reader in the dark about the menace-soon-to-come removed anticipation which was needed in the novel. By changing out the prologue and giving it the villian’s POV, I upped the stakes and the tension, AND I managed to do all that without having to rewrite the entire Part 1 which had been what I was contemplating to help the pacing. I’m a happy person today. Next up, at least three chapters done before next Wednesday. Why Wednesday? I’m using reddit’s fantasywriters’ check in as…

New Beginnings (Yup, Rewriting the Prologue)

Last week, I relooked at my outline and adjusted it accordingly to the changes I made. Something was off, I knew but I wasn’t sure what. After I redid the outline, I was more confused. What I have down is a good foundation with room for excitement and buildup, plus nice quiet moments. What was bugging me? Then I realized, I was building up to a climax where it would leave the readers in confusion. BUT! Just cause the characters are confused, doesn’t mean the reader should be. I started looking at it from the end of the 2nd book.…

NaNoWriMo’s Almost Here. Are You Participating?

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month – November) is about to start. I haven’t been participating the last few years but it’s a great tool so I will this year. To participate, one just has to declare the intention to write 50,000 within the month of November. This isn’t a tool for 2nd or 3rd drafts which is why I haven’t participated in the past few sessions. Since I’m working on the 1st draft of Thwarted Wills, it’s a great tool especially since I’ve got the outline worked out. Going to try out a couple of widgets here, then maybe create…

Reason #56 for Not Posting Here

The past few weeks have been a swirl of emotions/actions. A friend died (more on this later) prompting a visit from my best friend, my nephew came up for a weekend, it’s the high pressure season with work, and there’s stuff to do in the garden. Needless to say, my writing didn’t stop just here. It stopped on “Thwarted Wills” as well. The last couple of nights though, I couldn’t stop myself from working on Chapter 11. Managed a few paragraphs. Using two POV’s and voices gives me such a different feeling when I’m writing them. With Tristien, my sense…
